BELARUS

The Belarussian final was held on December 26th at the 600 Metrov, Minsk, hosted by Olga Ryzhikova and Denis Dudinskiy. Before the final, there was an auditions process, broadcast online which reduced the field to 15. The song to be sung in Vienna will be "Time" performed by the duo Uzari & Maimuna.

BRTC had an open selection process, as they have had in most recent years. The scoring system in the final was similar to previous years as 1/8 of the score was from televoting whist the other 7 jurors have 1/8 each. Although Muzzart won the televote, they barely got any votes from the jury. At least the Belarussians are transparently opaque! The production and sound values on the webcast sounded awful and so songs that sounded bad may not have been quite as bad as we thought! For this reason, I've also added the audition film below too.

The song starts off as a piano led ballad but grows and grows into something more up-tempo and punchier. The chorus as the main selling point here, or at least should be. The song in itself is written really well with lots of highlights, and a very earworm-y chorus but what it gains in tune it lacks in production values. The violin solo 2 minutes in needs more work as it doesn't work in the performance as it was on the night and the ending is a little odd.

Uzari has quite an intriguing voice and an engaging personality - you certainly feel like he is really pulling you into the song. His voice really suits the song and I quite like the way he can't quite reach the high note in the chorus. Maimuna comes into view just before the first chorus as the music starts to change. She is a very attractive young lady but really doesn't do very much. They interact quite well although at times it looks a bit placed and forced and unnatural. Maybe one they know what the stage will be like they can work something much more stunning and visual. i find this quite odd as their audition performance showed better chemistry than the one in the national final....  Also the clock motifs on the back drop and on screen really worked and I liked the gold cogs-like necklace motif on Uzari's neckline!

This has a lot of potential. Hopefully somebody will make the chemistry between the two much more believable by better use of the staging and much cleaner camera work. As I've already said, quite a bit of work needs to be done on the production value of the backing track. I think if they can get this sorted they will have a really good entry. Adding extra backing singers might beef up the power of the chorus but I do hope not too many dancers are involved - these two are enough!

I am really surprised by this entry and I actually think this is a decent song full stop, never mind a song for Eurovision. If they sort out the production problems and make these two really connect they could be on for a really good placing. This is possibly my favourite Belarus entry ever - but that's not saying much !

NETHERLANDS

The Dutch entry was premiered via the radio on December 11th during the show "Gouden Uren" and then debuted on TV during "The Voice" the next day. The song to be sung in Vienna will be "Walk Along" sung by Trijntje Oosterhuis.

The national broadcaster AVROTROS, like the last few years, decided to internally select their act for Eurovision. Back in November the rumours were confirmed that Trijntje would be the artist and that she would be singing a song written and produced by former Dutch Eurovision competitor, Anouk.

The song will bring is a mid tempo, slightly country-ish number - it certainly sounds like an Anouk track! It reminds me slightly of "One good reason" in 1999. It has a very repetitive and ear-wormy chorus The verses are very simplistic and don't stand out, however this over-emphasises the catchy chorus. Within one listen, the "why-ay-ay-ay" part of the chorus is stuck in your head forever. Having heard the song on and off now for the past week, I would like the song to have an ever so slightly faster tempo as I think this would get people flag waving and clapping much quicker

Trijntje is a well polished and experienced performer having been in the music business since the 90's. She has great stage presence and movement, knows where to look for the cameras and how to interact with the crowd, as well as how to present herself. Her voice suits the song well and she has decent pronunciation and vocal power. She also looks really good although if she wears a similar outfit in Vienna, I'd like here to have a slightly better hairstyle or even a jaunty hat!

Keeping in mind that this is an Anouk number - I don't think there will be many changes to the song and its production! The performance on the voice was quite minimal but will need to be thought through a bit more for Austria. I don't want to see dancers, as it isn't a dancy track and would take too much attention away from Trijtje. I'd like to see a row of male/female backing singers (maybe Ilse and Marco could be persuaded to join in considering they enjoyed the Voice performance so much!) I'd also suggest it needs a consistent and quite plain background, nothing too busy

This is a very strong song with a very catchy tune. The chorus is not too repetitive but gets inside your head. This will appeal to those who just watch the contest on the night and the viewers will remember it..... Enough to vote for it? I'm not that sure. You can certainly tell that the Dutch are striding along in confidence at the moment when it comes to Eurovision and I think this should easily qualify to the Saturday night.

2015 show 2

Round up number 2 of the countdown to Eurovision 2015.

Not really that much news this week but there was some trepidation to exactly what the much hyped Dutch entry was going to sound like! There will be a review of this later in the week but you can hear my tentative first opinion here. I also watched the start of the Cyprus Eurovision selection process, which confused me greatly... mainly because I don't speak Greek!

I'm not sure if it was the lack of news OR abundance of pregnancy hormones but this week's episode seemed to go off kilter a bit too quickly! MALTA

The Maltese Final was held on November 22th at Marsa Shipbuilding (home the previsous week to Junior Eurovision) hosted by Daniel Chircop and Lyona Xuereb Gatt. Before the final there was a semi-final the previous evening, with 14 of the 20 songs qualifying for the final. The voting was a mixture of an "expert" jury and televoting and the winner was "Warrior" sung by Amber.

The Maltese took the same route as they have done over the past few years, with a semi-final and final... just a bit earlier than normal! This said, I find the semi aspect of this qualification a little redundant as they only get rid of 6 songs. For a semi final I would expect the field to be cut more substantially than that. The show seemed a very Maltese affair with the same old adverts and to be honest the same old singers!

The song will bring comparisons to Moldova's failed entry last year. The minimalist dub-steppy backing track is a great palette to showcase Amber's singing and performance skills. It starts of like a normal ballad but then ramps up pretty quickly. The chorus is very memorable but the rest of the song is a little non-descript. It is very easy to become lost and unhooked during the verses. If Amber wasn't so much of an engaging singer, this song would not have worked.

Amber has an amazing voice - much better live than in the recording. I also like the way she seemed quite confident just standing there on her own, interpreting the song herself, without a barrage of dancers or an over the top backdrop. She has to push quite hard to get tot he higher notes but she never really seemed strained or OTT.

I have a feeling that Malta will probably rip this up and start all over again. It wouldn't surprise me if it turned into the hot mess of Moldova last year. I personally think it works as it is, although a revamp of the backing track might not be a bad idea. They may well give Amber a more warrior-like dress to wear, especially to stand out a bit more against that backdrop. Less is more, Malta...
However you must also keep in the back of your mind the fact that the new Maltese Eurovision rules state that they could decided to drop the song totally for something brand new...

In fairness, the field was not that strong and this stood out a mile as an obvious winner and scored 12 points from all 5 jurors AND the televoting. I don't think it will be quite the same come May. Just don't mess about with it too much, Malta!!!

FYR MACEDONIA

The Macedonian Final was held on November 12th at the Metropolis Arena in Skopje, hosted by Vasil Zafircev. The winner was chosen by televoting (50%) and by a range of international juries from Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Netherlands and Croatia (50%). After conclusively winning the televote, the act going to Vienna will be Danijel Kajmakovski with the song "Esenski lisja" (Autumn Leaves)

This year, FYROM brought back the much missed Skopje Fest to choose their entry. As well as showcasing a range of song genres in the and singers the show was really entertain. In particular the host's interpretation of a range of Eurovision classics was quite funny, especially the full on matador version of "Bandido" and the balletic rendition of "Nocturne" in something which resembled Norwegian! If anything, the most negative thing I can say is that the whole thing took too long to get going as MRT spent most of the first 30mins of the show talking to guests (mostly previous FYROM Eurovision acts) as they came into the hall.

The song is a very contemporary number that probably could be heard on most radio stations - in the local lingo of course. It has a familiar ring to it but that may well just be it's modern nature - not something FYROM has been noted for in the past. The verses of the song are quite predictable in structure and something you can find yourself getting to quite quickly but the bridge part slows the impetus the song has. The chorus could be really special with a backing track rather than the live orchestra. The ending really needs looking at as it has damp squib written all over it as it stands.
My main issue is that as it stands it is too long. I personally think they could shorten the piano introduction, quicken the whole thing up a tad and make the beat in the chorus much stronger. Considering the delegation now has 6 months to finalise an act for Vienna, they could literally do anything.

Daniel seems a very confident and accomplished singer. He has good charisma with the camera and the audience in the hall. It seems like the song is really within him and can comfortably pull it off. I would feel confident to have him as the singer representing my country. However I would definitely think of giving him something better to wear - something than makes him less like Ovi's little brother who has been let out for the night. I would also advise him to stay away from the swivelling dance steps in the middle.

As I have already hinted any kinds of changes could occur between now and May. The first thing to consider would be if they are willing to change into English. Part of me feels that if the language was to be changed it might be worth making the song much more plot driven a la "Running" last year. Secondly the song needs much more of a staging - this again may be affected by any language change. I feel that the song needs backing singers to add atmosphere but does it need dancers too...?

As there is nothing to compare it to, this is tricky.
I certainly don't hate it, yet I don't love it to pieces but it is certainly a great place to start from - it has plenty of time grow, morph and fall into its place in Eurovision 2015.

JUNIOR EUROVISION 2014

This mini-pop version of the real thing has some through some changes and ups and downs over the years. However this year's contest feels different. Maybe it is because many of the contestants look and sound more mature, or that the songs feel more modern and less bubble gum or maybe it is down to the sudden jump in entry numbers and general media interest around Europe.

This year we some returnees after a break (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Serbia) as well as 3 brand new participating countries (Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia) With a mix of groups, solo acts, ballads and dance numbers, this year seems like an interesting if not hard year to judge. This is made a little more difficult as so few of the entries were chose through a live national final and many songs only have a generic pop video to judge on. However after a couple of days of rehearsal I do have a very small window to judge their vocal ability on...

1) BELARUS: Nadezhda Misyakova - Sokal (Falcon)
This is an odd little number, especially as an opening to the show. Nadezhda seems to have the spirit of a small Ruslana while looking like a mini Carola.
Vocally she seems to carry the song off well although I'm not too sure how well she can perform the elongated choruses with some of the nerves on the night. I like the fields motifs and the back ground and seems to echo the folky quality of the song. The song itself has a pleasant feel and the chorus has a good ear worm. However I find that the song lacks light and shade - except for the end which doesn't work.
She seems to be styled more like an American Indian with the headband on!

2) BULGARIA: Krisia, Hasan & Ibrahim - Planet of the children
Considering the failure of the country in adult Eurovision, this return to jESC is a bit out of the blue - as is the standard of their entry.
This is a moody, if not quite adult, ballad sung by the tiniest little thing. The song has an almost classical feel and a this kind of song could easily have been an entry in the adult version This all said the musicality and professionalism of Hasan and Ibrahim must not be underestimated and I hope their role is not minimised too much on screen.
Krisia is obviously a very talented and passionate singer but rumours are that she has been sick this week and a poor vocal on this song will destroy its chances.

3) SAN MARINO: The Peppermints - Breaking my heart
My goodness, this is choreographed within an inch of it's life!
From watching the rehearsal I was really surprised how much a full show this is. Firstly they star on the floor, then do some stomping down the catwalks, duo dancing and dancing in a line. It's quite a full on show! Vocally they are not bad. Considering they spend most of the song moving, I would expect a loss of energy near the end but they seems great from start to finish. If anything I would have liked to have heard more harmony in the chorus.
The song is a bit of a grower and the chorus gets inside your head really quickly and I think this could be a really good result!

4) CROATIA: Josie - Game Over
The title really says it all...
Poor Josie looks really out of her depth here. She is a cute petite little things and she looks really uncomfortable on stage, especially dancing. I would've preferred her being more natural and 'acting' with the dancers who show here up a little bit. Josie also doesn't have the best of voices but also she looks *petrified* She could possibly get away with being a little bit small in the voice if she looked a little more girly and cute and smiley.
The song itself is not bad (with a great opening to the chorus) but needs much more power in the backing track. However she has the best background of the night!

5) CYPRUS: Sophia Patsalides - I pio omforfi mera (The most wonderful day)
And I thought Alanis Morrisette was Canadian...
For the video of this song, Sophia is surrounded by other dancers who do a lot of the moving to this song but on the stage she is alone. I didn't think this change would work but it really does. She has a great command of the stage and actually moves really well. She certainly looks the most mature and professional act on the stage and I hope it doesn't come across too polished or adult.
This is a very typical dance song of the moment but is not as repetitive as many of the songs in this year's contest. Sophia has a great voice and is one of the few who really interacts with the audience.

6) GEORGIA: Lizi Pop - Happy Day
This sounds nothing like Miley Cyrus's Wrecking Ball.... Honestly!
This is a very odd song. The structure and tune of the song sounds quite sad and melancholy yet you have this tiny child with a big mouth singing Happy Day. It just sounds a bit odd. Lizi does belt the whole thing out but it ends up feeling a little bit screechy and you need feel 100% confident that she's going to reach the high notes.
Like in the video Lizi is backed by 4 dancers, one of which sports a plaster cast/arm sling in one version. To be honest the whole thing just looks and sounds messy and disjointed and I would expect much, much more from Georgia.

7) SWEDEN: Julia Kedhammar - Du är inte ensam (You're not alone)
This entry could only come from one country... Dance-schlager has made it's way to jESC
Overall I am quite under-awed by this song and performance. The verses seem to low and tuneless and although the chorus seems perkier it still feels a bit pedestrian. From rehearsals, it seems that she is backed by 4 dancers, possibly in an attempt to inject meaning and oomph into the song.
Unfortunately it falls flat for me as it just makes poor Julia look a bit stilted and nervous. The key change at the end is decidedly dodgy and needs a lot work. If I could offer ANY artistic direction, I would have liked to have seen something more like David Lindgren's "Skyline"

8) UKRAINE: Sympho-Nick - Pryyde vesna (Spring will come)
So finally, Zlata's "Gravity" gets the Junior treatment as sung by Feminem Juniors.
The trio certainly have their own style, physically and vocally, which will stand them in good stead. The girls seem very confident in what they do and seem to enjoy the song. Like many of the national final routed songs, the performance looks to have changed very little in essence, although they have made good use of the catwalks at the start.
The song takes a little time to get going but then it gets into its stride. My main concern is that this is more 'muzak in a lift' than something a junior audience can comprehend and sing along with.

9) SLOVENIA: Ula Ložar - Nisi sam /Your light (You're not alone)
If hearing was believing, this might be a winner - just keep your eyes closed!
Ula has a great voice and is very pure and clean in the high notes, you'd think she couldn't get that high but she does with ease. The performance is very simple and actually she has an expressive face and expressive hands so the close ups should be quite interesting.
I do however have a couple of issues with her performance. Firstly she switched around the languages a lot during rehearsals and it would be nice to see here reduce the English part. Secondly STOP MESSING WITH YOUR HAIR and thirdly I hope that outfit isn't anything like what you will wear on Saturday!

10) MONTENEGRO: Maša & Lejla - Budi dijete na jedan dan (Be a child for a day)
After finally qualifying in Adult Eurovision, Montenegro have made the jump to jESC.
The song is quite Yugoslavian sounding, with echoes of "Rock Me" and "Hajde da ludujemo" about it but also have a slightly dated feel. Maša and Lejla are together and go through a quite simple dance routine in the middle of the stage whilst blending the voices in harmony in the chorus.
Needless to say, it looks and sounds a little bit amateur, almost a bit seaside talent contest sounding, compared to the other entries but in this way it has a certain innocent charm and appeal that many of the over-polished songs don't have. Let's hope *some* countries give it points so they come back next year!

11) ITALY: Vincenzo Cantiello - Tu primo grande amore (Your first great love)
The only boy in the competition really is trying hard!
He has a very flexible voice with quite a range for a small boy. My only real issue with him is the fact that his style of singing can come across to diva-ish when I feel that having someone with a more gruff male voice would REALLY make him stand out from the crowd.
He is alone on stage, a bit like in the video but he has a very expressive face which will make a difference on the camera close ups. the song is a fairly standard dramatic ballad which doesn't really have much of a tune. The song is quintessentially Italian in style which may lose or gain it fans.

12) ARMENIA: Betty - People of the Sun
Possibly the most 'Junior Eurovision' song of the whole night.
There have been many changes to the staging since the national final which has done it some good. Betty is now on a platform which gives her a bit more independence when it comes to moving and dancing, more prominence on the stage but does move her away from the audience. The dancers are really amazing!
Betty has an ok voice but the song is within her range. The tune of the chorus is quite catchy. It's also a shame that jESC is in winter as this is the most summery of the whole bunch. Stuck between a couple of similar styled ballads may be to its advantage.

13) RUSSIA: Alisa Kozhikina - Dreamer
Another power ballad sung by a tiny child.
There is no doubt that Alisa can sing and that this song really shows off her vocal talents. But I also have to remind myself that this is a SONG contest and not all about the singer. The song a little bit drippy and over-indulgent but this does not mean it is easy to sing. The official video is very well made and really reflects the meaning and tone of the song.
However she seems to be singing alone on the stage static and most of the movement will be done via the camera work. It is unfortunately quite forgettable if not over-saccharine. If it was nearer the middle, it would be time for tea...

14) SERBIA: Emilija Đonin -Svet u mojim očima (World in my eyes)
Tea time has just been extended...
This song, unfortunately, is just blandness personified. Maybe I was hoping for something a bit more Balkan a bit more Serbian rather than something from Vanilla Land. To be fair, Emilija has a good voice for piano ballads and seems to be well within herself when singing the song, it's just a shame that the song goes nowhere.
She is alone on stage and plays the piano for the first 2 minutes. Then she gets up and walks to the front of the stage. This point of the song either needs to be more dramatic in her stance or facial expressions or more interactive with the audience in the hall to gain votes.

15) MALTA: Federica Falzon - Diamonds
If operatic minipops did Bond themes...
I find this song a real love/hate affair. On one hand I love her voice in the top of her range and her vocal skill is amazing for someone of her age. The staging is very simple yet effective (almost similar is style to Conchita) and I feel this song will really stick out.
However in the verses, the song feels far too low and generally I cannot understand a word she says. She could be singing in Maltese for all I know! Plus she needs to stop doing the armography in the choruses - it doesn't look natural and you can tell she is thinking about it. Getting the feeling Malta want to do well but not win.

16) NETHERLANDS: Julia - Around
This is a modern, radio friendly ditty however this is almost it's problem.
It's a slick production and it looks like the whole thing is being transported as was in the national final to the jESC stage. It almost looks and feels to good to be true... The song has a good structure with quiet and tuneful verses and a powerful, earwormy- chorus. Julia performs the whole thing well, vocally, although I worry she seems stilted and choreographically uncertain.
My main concern is that the chorus is too much - especially when you consider that literally the last 90 seconds is the chorus sung over and over and over again. It makes you wonder when it's going to bloody end!!!!

As for a winner - I have no clue. I guess it will come down to who performs the best and who the audience is most feels the most accessible and likeable. My favourite three are probably Bulgaria, San Marino and Cyprus but I wish them all the best of luck on Saturday night!

ESCfaves 5

And now the end is near...

Yes I've come to the final instalment on my favourite entries ever!
As you will hear many of the countries on today's list were very difficult and I changed one song literally as I was about to start recording!

Today's selection brings reminiscences of Busted (although it's McBusted these days), duets involving in stabbings (seemingly true!), songs John Peel once played live on Radio One (very much true) and my suggestion for next year's interval act (I would love it to be true.)

I'll also explain why I don't like French and Danish languages, I find that Baltic Eurovision contestants seemingly all know each other and ponder if a certain country should stop being so stereotypical. (The answer ends up being NO!!!!)

This week I play entries from Andorra, Austria, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro and Spain.

ESCfaves 3

The 3rd of five retro-views!

This week proves a bit of a challenge as I love  SO MANY of the songs on offer tonight I do go a bit OTT with the stories and superlatives....
I offer a small anecdote about my time on "Pointless" and share a conversation that was left on the editors floor and share with you which country I feel is the best in the world! (generally, not just in Eurovision terms!) However I must warn you that I do rant about one country which I have since discovered has NO songs I really like *shock horror*

This week's selection is taken from Albania, Belgium, France, Iceland, Italy, Malta, Romania, Slovenia and United Kingdom.

Happy Birthday

Don't worry - this is no self-indulgent podcast!

Yes, it is my birthday but as you will soon discover this is actually a veil to disguise the REAL reasoning and theme behind this podcast. There has been a lot of things happening behind the scenes in DVVH Towers and today I unveil one of this things happening this Eurovision year.

On the podcast you will hear an iconic Belgian entry, one of my favourite Fininsh entries (even if they look like they are dressed in their grannies' nighties) and a Luxembourgish super group. Follow us on twitter at https://www.twitter.com/DVVHolland

Strictly Come Eurovision

To while away the hours until Eurovision season really kicks in, I'll be spending most of my weekends watching and critiquing the dancers and dances on BBC One's "Strictly Come Dancing".
I guess it is a bit like Eurovision, with the bizarre props and costumes, with possible costume changes, however all without the out of tune singing but also generally in English.

I leave you in this podcast with dance related songs, some more relevant than others, but also let you in on the songs that didn't quite make the mark...

Backing bands

Hello - I'm not dead !!!!

I am so sorry about the long length of time since the last podcast but as I explain I have had a lot on my plate over the last 2 months and finally I have a bit of time and space to myself to do a podcast.

This podcast has the theme of 'singers and their backing banks and through this I disclose to you one of my guilty pleasures, I talk through some of the down sides of having 'favourite' Eurovisions and if you can share any tips on how to write/draw an ampersand I would like to hear them!

ESC Austria

Today's podcast is a very much potted history of Austria in Eurovision.

After their second win in Copenhagen it's time to look back and maybe find out why they have only won 2 times in in 47 attempts!

My own feelings on Austrian Eurovision entries is quite simple - they have had quite a few decent songs but for one reason or another they have never really quite done well enough and with that in mind it makes Conchita's win 2 months ago all the more remarkable.

2014 DVVH Awards!

I know it's late but it is finally here.

A combination of  intermittent work, bad timing and some quite horrid bouts of illness have prevented me from doing this podcast up 'til now - better later than never I say!

Here I take a tongue in cheek look at this year's contest and give out some deserved (and undeserved) award to this year's participants!

Categories this year include - the Sieneke award for Worst Prop, Most Annoying Dancing, the Invisibility award and Best Finger Point.... Can you guess my winners...?

2014 wrap up

Sorry about the delay to this podcast but life has been pretty full on since Eurovision plus as you will hear my voice is not as good as it should be !
In this podcast I take my eye over the grand final and talk about the good and bad of the show and how those who did well got extra marks and how those who did not so well may have missed the spot.

Next time I will be unveiling the Inaugural DVVH Eurovision Awards,
If you have an 'alternative' category or nominee get in touch on twitter and leave me a comment or suggestion. As you will hear I'm not being *that* serious about it....

Final Predictions

The two semis are done and dusted - all that is left to do is decide who on earth is going to win... and as you may have listened to my semi predictions - I'm not really good at this!!!! So as you will see I don't *really* predict anything...

I briefly recap the results of the semis (and talk about how hopless I am at predicting) and have a run down of the devised running order - which I think is quite, quite odd... which could cause some unusual results!

And of course I talk to you about the beer I will be drinking this Eurovision - I may not end Saturday night being happy with the result - but I will be merry!!!

Semi-final predictions

Well, this day DID have to come and as you hear the last 24 hours fretting over these predictions had given me quite the headache!

Therefore I had a plan - not 1... not 2... but 3 sets of predictions!

Firstly my own top 10 (based on a cumulative score for song, vocal performance and visual show)
Secondly the "Shite or Alright" top 10 (an amalgamation of  me, my husband the the esctips score)
Thirdly a mash up of the two with  a bit of gut feeling mixed in.

Even with so few songs in each, not an easy thing to do! And I dont think any of the 3 sets will be bang on!

I'll be back on Friday night to look at the songs in the final and make another bold prediction!

Rehearsals

Rehearsals have been up and running for the last week and clips and pictures have been popping up here, there and everywhere from them.

In this podcast I take a look at what's happened and talk through a some of the surprises (good and bad) shocks (good and bad) the outfits (good... but mainly bad) and the frankly ever-elongating list of entries that can only be described as a hot mess...

One song is too aggressive, another not aggressive enough...
One song is too monochrome, another is too colourful...
Many acts have no charisma, several need to let go a bit more but one act has turned into Hi-Di-Hi circa 1984 with Su Pollard on vocals... in black and white...
I tell many acts to get rid of their gimmicks (especially the meaningless dancers) and I have a slightly restrained rant about invisible backing singers. I am sure I will have a lot more to say about that issue once Eurovision is done and dusted...

In between songs courtesy of Steve Yabsley!

I'll be back tomorrow with my predictions (for my sins!)

DVVHolland visits BBC Radio Bristol

A quick plug before all the Eurovision shenanigans really kicks up a fuss.

Last Friday, I visited BBC Radio Bristol's Steve Yabsley show to talk about all things Eurovision!

I will admit to being TERRIBLY nervous before going on air and I had so many facts, figures, names, faces and dates in my head I did go in a bit bunny in the headlights (hence why I debated if we'd won 5 times or 4 times!) Overall I had a lovely chat with my Yabsley and he seemed to enjoy it too!

I am going to slightly blow my own trumpet here so forgive me if I seem a bit self-indulgent.
It's not often I put myself forward to doing things like this. Behind the façade of the website, twitter and online forums I am really quite shy, unconfident and empty of self esteem. Most of the time I am being told how rubbish I am or how I'm not good enough or that I am a horrid person so I was really happy to have been invited to talk about something I am knowledgeable of and have a passion for... and I don't really have very many of those...
I just sometimes wish I could explain to you all what this passion means to me and that it is something that makes me whole, part of a community and gives me a direction for my happiness. This was a really big thing for me even if it seemed trivial and unimportant to those who knew about it.

It is available to listen to via the BBC iplayer and will be for the next few days here and I am on from about 31 mins onwards.

If you enjoyed me - tell me :)

2014 SOA episode 6

It's the last Shite or Alright podcast!!!!

I don't know if it was just Eurovision fatigue, our general mardyness or that the first 3 songs on the podcast weren't particularly inspiring but it took us a fair while to warm up today. However we do have a VERY special culinary guest to cheer us up (not really). And as this is the final review podcast we then work out who our overall winner is!!!

Topics today include Shakira's boobs, the Cliffhanger game on The Price is Right, the suggestion that DR don't use maps during the final, the song "When I'm cleaning windows", we have some words from our sponsors and we end with an epic off the cuff unrehearsed dubstep breakdown!!!

Today's songs come from Albania, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Finland, France and Malta.

2014 SOA episode 5

Episode 5 of the Eurovision podcast that pulls no punches...

Unfortunately no sign of Don Wessel this time (you can solve THAT story for yourselves) however we have gone back to our formula of backing small businesses... even if the adverts are truly appalling...

We start this podcast where we we left the last one and should probably be renamed 'the sexual health clinic" based episode"... The English language police are back, I'm rude about Charlotte Perrelli (again), Jopijedd has an excuse to make seagull noises (again), I suggest they need to relocate BBC WM's "Hunted (you either get that reference, or you don't) and finally *FINALLY* we agree on a proper contender!!

Music comes from Portugal, Moldova, Latvia, UK, San Marino and Hungary

2014SOA episode 4

Time for episode 4 of Shite or Alright!

This week, after some hard work scouring the internet for a suitable partner, we have corporate sponsorship (although I'm not sure how much trouble we will get from it!) The podcast seems to be full of a lot of very angry women today - and I certainly get ranty near the end! We discuss the downside of EDM music, wonder if Roger Whittaker will be making a comeback, compare one song to a Black Lace number which is a favourite of ours on 3-2-1, discuss if the Claudia Wincklefringe has a place in Eurovision and one song makes me have *very* inappropriate images come into my head....
Sorry about the slightly odd editing... but we're not the BBC so you can put up with it !!!!

On the Eurovision menu today we have Switzerland, Israel, Spain, Montenegro, Estonia and Sweden.

2014SOA episode 3

After a short Easter break we are back with episode 3 of Shite or Alright!

As you will hear, Jopijedd doesn't like chewing!
This week, we mention the delights of Italian shopping (although getting to Italy has been a problem) we think about all the Belgian/Flemish music we like who *could* have done Eurovision instead, we think about who would *easily* beat Cheryl Cole in a bitch fight and we suggest that one artist's next logical step is Glastonbury! we only live down the road so they could stay with us!!!!

This week we listen to Poland, Russia, Italy, Belgium, Romania and Austria.

2014SOA episode 2

Another Eurovision podcast!

The gruesome twosome have another domestic live on air and generally shout over each other in a unprofessional manner!

We have some brand-spanking-new, up-to-date and ultra-modern show sponsors this week... however (as you can tell) I'm not too impressed with the second one! We compare one act to Morrissey, another to Gramophonedzie (remember them guys and gals?!?!) and sing the German national national according to Stefan Raab... I then suggest one song sounds like "What would Brian Boitano do?" and we discover which contestant has the most West Country name... all in just over an hour!
And I am very sorry for my husband's very bad Shakespeare impression....

Today we rip apart Slovenia, Armenia, Lithuania, Germany, Greece and Norway.

2014SOA episode 1

The rule book is out the window - Shite or Alright is back!!!!

As ever, @mrs_forky and @jopijedd get out the claws and review this year's Eurovision songs.
If you're new to the review podcast - welcome - but there are a few things you need to remember:
a) there is generally lots of swearing
b) the points system -    1 point - shite         2 - trite        3 - quite         4 - alright          5 - meteorite
c) there is quite a lot of swearing
d) she's the eurovision fan - he's just a passenger/hostage
e) there is an awful lot of swearing

Apart from the obvious Eurovision 'fun' we have a message from one of our loyal sponsors, sing far too many songs about time, moan about the word 'featuring', show off our knowledge of the Rubberbandits' back catalogue, slag off Paul Hollywood and generally swear a lot (and that's without mentioning the naughty words in the Danish entry!)

This week we get the chance to listen to FYR Macedonia, The Netherlands, Ireland, Georgia, Iceland, Belarus and this year's hosts Denmark

2014 RANKINGS

1) AUSTRIA
Adele and James Bond's loss is Eurovision's gain. This song has been a revelation. I was hoping for an up-tempo number but this song has so much attitude and verve but also brings out the feistiness of Conchita. She will sell this and sing this with passion - I just know it won't get the votes it deserves.

2) MALTA
This is a grower. Although I didn't think that much of it during preselection, it has slowly crept up the rankings. However I must admit that the video is just STUNNING  and gives an extra dimension to the song's meaning. The singers in Firelight are so harmonious and technically on point.

3) HUNGARY
A slow song with dubstep choruses really but importantly the words reflect the tempo. A great song that also contains a serious message on the subject of domestic violence - something portrayed in his performance, Kallay-Saunders has a great voice but will need to work on his camera presence to sell it.

4) MONTENEGRO
Initially, you may be mistaken that this was the Irish entry. This slow rhythmical ballad in the local tongue won't be easy to understand, which will lose it votes, but the tune of the song is stunning - as is the wonderful touristy video! Sergej will hopefully make this the country's first final qualification!

5) GREECE
Not a whiff of balalaika or souk to be heard! A fantastic retro dance song with the odd sample of Balkan-esque trumpets. Although rapping at Eurovision is not the best thing to do, it contrasts with the repetitive choruses. Freaky Fortune & Riskykidd need to make sure the country can afford to win first.

6) FRANCE
This is a great summery dance tune with a great sense of fun and rhythm. Although it is mostly in French the song there is more emphasis on the rhythm than the lyrics of the song. With a bit of thought this could be a really visual number with TwinTwin's individual sense of styling.

7) LITHUANIA
This has the best intro this year and sets out the stall of the song straight away. The verses are simplistic but the bridge is quite special and choruses are really punchy and memorable. The dancing always works well. Vilija has a great personality but needs to make sure the story of the song comes through.

8) BELGIUM
This is a very sweet yet also dramatic ballad. The song really grows and the live versions, although not perfect, have always been better than the recorded version. But Axel needs to watch his French accent. Just a shame the Axel's stylists has dressed him up as the "Go Compare" man.

9)  ROMANIA
This is the typical mixed tempo Eurovision fayre that we would expect to find in the contest. The chorus is ear catching and has lots of different beats to it. Paul and Ovi are returners to the contest and know how this thing works. Paula's note near the end is quite literally a miracle!

10) NORWAY
This year's "Birds". This emotionally driven song will speak to all even if they don't understand English. It is quiet and unassuming which will make it stand out among all the busyness. Carl Epsen's voice is even more surprising when you seen he is a rather butch, tattooed ginger.

11) ISRAEL
A really modern contemporary song that would not feel out of place on the playlists of Heart (not so much a good thing)  the chorus is really memorable and the song have a very sinister dark feeling. Mei has a fantastically velvety rock-edged voice and should put on a really good show.

12) UNITED KINGDOM
For the first time in a while, the UK has taken the contest and bit more seriously or at least treated it with some respect. This thumping song has a great progression and a chanting quality to it. Molly has also proved she can sing this live, which gives me great confidence in a good finish.

13) ARMENIA
What starts off a slow ballad turns into an angry, shouty rant. This is a very individual song and will stand out a mile with its dark mood and dubstep backing track. Still, the fact that Aram MP3 did not sing this live during the presentation show bugs me and makes me doubt he can do this properly live.

14) FYR MACEDONIA
A modern dance number with lots of instrumental parts. This song has grown on me over the weeks and feel that choosing the song in English was ultimately the best choice. Tijana has an interesting look and an even more interesting voice - hopefully her deep tones will entice the voters!

15) SWITZERLAND
Singing, fiddling and whistling - all in one song! The whistling motif is infectious, catchy and language beating! Sebalter is not the best singer, doesn't have the best pronunciation but he knows how to work a camera. Let's hope he stays in time with the music all the way through.

16) IRELAND
Another typical Irish uptempo song with fiddle and dancers to boot. The chorus is anthemic and the start is also strong. The verses and bridge don't sit quite as well. The backing track needs more oomph and beat to keep it driving on. Kasey is a good singer but needs to put on a show.

17) ICELAND
The song sounds like a theme tune to a 1990's CBBC show. The singers work well together and the main singer does well during all the stutter parts. The outfits are really memorable and the dad dancing is quite funny. If only Pollapönk had kept this in Icelandic it'd be in my top 5.

18) SAN MARINO
This Siegel penned song is a whimsical, thoughtful ballad which suits Valentina's jazzy voice. The title is very prominent and memorable but it may have been better to have something in Italian again. Hopefully she will having something visual to go with it. Will this be 3rd time lucky for Valentina?

19) POLAND
This song has been a huge hit in its homeland and the video has been a viral hit on youtube. Although in Polish, the song has an unmistakable rhythm, is really repetitive and gets you clapping along. Not sure if Donatan and Cleo are a little too in your face and urban for Eurovision...

20) GERMANY
This is a song that is quite literally a mix of everything so much that it almost sounds like nothing. Part oompah band, part folk, part Slavic, part klezmer and should appeal to many people. It has a good beat, a memorable chorus, and the lead singer of Elaiza has a distinctive tone and range.

21) PORTUGAL
This is a real party/carnival song with hints of Lambada, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez about it. With a energetic and colourful stage show this could do much better. The chorus is very memorable and singalongable even in Portuguese. However, Suzy needs to be more energetic on stage.

22) SPAIN
This is a typical Spanish ballad which goes far too over the top. The chorus is memorable but it takes to long to get there and too long to get to the dramatic ending. Although Ruth Lorenzo is known to UK viewers this may fall flat elsewhere as they run from their TVs due to the size of her mouth.

23) FINLAND
I would say this was the only rock song in the contest although more in the style of Brit Pop than Lordi. The song has weak verses although the chorus is very chanty. The mid section clap-along 'oh-oh-oh' bit gets you clapping and singing along. Softengine may find themselves low on the scoreboard.

24) ESTONIA
Very much inspired by Loreen's "Euphoria" in terms of musical style and from that view it is a little predictable. The tune of the song is quite good but the lyrics don't quite make sense to me.  However the performance is quite a sight to behold as Tanja's dance routine out-Loreen's Loreen.

25) DENMARK
The title holders look to win again with this Motown number. The song is radio friendly and modern and his voice is very ear catching. However it's all a little bit knowing, smug and self assured. The dancers are also really annoying and over the top. Basim is less Bruno Mars, more Bruno Uranus.

26) LATVIA
The underdog of Eurovision. The song is a very simplistic ditty obviously written about the lead singer's admiration of The Great British Bake Off (is there a Latvian version..?) Intensely annoying/catchy/earwormy. Aarzemnieki will, whatever the result, bring some fun to the proceedings.

27) MOLDOVA
A typical Moldovan song - a big belter of a ballad with a dubstep breakdown. Goes a bit too high in the chorus. The staging was quite something in the national finals with funny mirrors, scarves attached to drones controlled by dancing Mongol soldiers. But Cristina has *THE* dress of the contest.

29) UKRAINE
After numerous remixes and rewrites we have a final version which is akin to mid-tempo '70s guitar led disco. The intro is too long, the key is too high and the ending too abrupt. It's a weak tune with even more unintelligible lyrics. Not quite sure if Mariya can actually pull this version off live.

30) AZERBAIJAN
At least there will be no annoying man in a box this year... A slow dramatic ballad with ethnic tones. A song you can listen to but not sing to. Sounds like a song from a movie that doesn't work outside the movie. If you can understand a word Dilara says then you're obviously a fan of Norman Collier.

31) GEORGIA
The most individual song of the year and is quite the assault on the senses. Not the most singalongable of songs but this is true to The Shin's musical style.  Just when you've got your head around the oddly chorded yodeling it goes into a proper song. Not sure if this is SEN or gifted & talented...

32) SLOVENIA
An odd dual language song that doesn't really progress very from start to finish. The stage act during the national final was a bit too staged for my liking. This is not a bad song - just a boring one. Tinkara plays the flute on stage however whacking someone on the head with it may give better entertainment value.

33) NETHERLANDS
An anti climax from last year's 9th place. This quiet country song is a bit too quiet and a bit too country for my taste. It starts and keeps on going with no ebb or flow, peaks and troughs. Although the Common Linnets are well known in their home country, this style won't be translating into votes.

34) ALBANIA
This *was* a nice song when sung in Albanian and with a in your face intro that made it almost 4 minutes long. Now it sounds unintelligible, forced, fake and odd. The tune if you can get past the weirdness is half decent. Plus, Herci has been turned into "Little Miss Emo" and it doesn't suit her.

35) ITALY
Not quite sure what all the fuss is about this song. For the most part is looks messy and sounds even messier. The verses are really forgetful and the choruses sound like Emma is having a slanging match with the other instruments. This is Eurovision, not a crowd surfing convention or fashion show.

36) SWEDEN
I really do not get this song. Not only is the tune similar to a dog's whine but some of the lyrics are an abomination of the English language. It is a very slow winy number which actually doesn't have that much of a positive message. The mid-20s Sanna looks more like a desperate menopausal cougar.

37) RUSSIA
It is not often I can hear a Eurovision song five times and have NO recollection of it whatsoever. This is a very weak and half-hearted entry from a country that normally finds itself in the top 10 on a regular basis. The Tolmachevy Twins may have won Junior Eurovision, but they won't be doing the double.
