SPAIN

The Spanish Final was held on February 26th at the TVE TV Studios in Sant Cugat, Barcelona, hosted by Carolina Ferré where the internally selected band, El Sueño De Morfeo (ESDM for short) performed all 3 songs. Before the final there was an internet based semi final where fans voted for the third song to be performed. semi-final The winner was chosen by televoting (50%) & an "expert" jury (50%) and was the song " Contigo hasta el final" (With you until the end)

The song was presented in front of a small studio audience and a jury. this consisted of José María Íñigo, the Spanish Eurovision commentator, the Italian representative for Malmo, Mario Mengoni, and the 2002 Spanish entrant, Rosa. The stage is set very simply with the band behind and the singer, Raquel, in a very red dress singing and moving out front. Some work will need to be done about this before Eurovision as at the moment it seems a bit flat and doesn't really engage or reach out to the audience at home or the audience in the theatre.

The song is typical ESDM fayre, full of ethnic instruments but with a rock edge. The song which is performed in Spanish, starts off sounding more like an Irish entry with chanting, bagpipes and fiddles.  Raquel starts singing slowly and then the drums kick in to make it much stronger although the tempo of the song stays the same. however it only really when the chorus kicks in you really notice the song. The chorus starts of slow but then the beat kicks in to make it much bouncier and stronger but again not faster. The other thing is that although it lasts the full 3 minutes it seems to go by in a flash. The introduction takes up at least half a minute and then the verses and choruses take too long to get going, ending up with a lot of wasted time.

In my opinion, this was not the best song of the night as "Atrévete" was a much better song for a Eurovision audience. The plus points of the selected song is that there are very few ethnic style entries this year and so will stand out. There is also the fact that it is not an out and out ballad and has lots of changes of style and tempo. However, this is nowhere near a winning song - not even with a language change. I can see it picking up the odd 1,2 or 3 points from a few countries and possibly a meatier score from Ireland (and a definite 12 from Portugal, if they were participating) but that is all.
